Among these demons, there was a wolf demon, who was the most hardworking and willing to work. He often got up before dawn to patrol the mountains, and did extra work late at night. Whenever he collected good things, he was always the first to pay tribute. He was busy all day and didn’t even have time to make friends with his companions. Everyone had no impression of him and couldn’t even call his name.
Seeing that he worked so hard but had no signs of promotion, his brother spent all his savings to buy him a seat for listening to the sutras in the Black Wind King’s temple. He sat in the dojo, but could not stop sighing: Since I came to Black Wind Mountain, my family has spent all the money, and my brother is still wasting this spare money, it’s a pity, if you can change my shield, it would be great, maybe when I have a new sword, I can make great achievements.
Just thinking about it, the guardians in yellow robes scattered some talismans to him. The king first ordered everyone to eat the talismans, and then led everyone to sit cross-legged and chant together loudly, chanting for an hour or so before stopping. When the king mentioned that those who have achieved results can stand up, he saw a white-robed wolf in front of him stand up first, sweating profusely, overjoyed, saying that his whole body was hot, and now his mind was clear.
The wolf demon thought to himself: How can we not sweat profusely when we are crowded in a room? How can we not be open-minded after chanting for a long time? He was puzzled, and the green bull demon behind him also stood up. Afterwards, more demons stood up one after another with the two of them. Seeing everyone like this, the wolf demon hesitated about what to do, but fortunately the king waved his hand and everyone sat down again.
Afterwards, many small demons were rewarded with treasures, the green bull demon got the golden elixir, and the white-robed wolf became the small leader of the outer mountain. The wolf demon still patrolled the mountain diligently with his old shield and broken sword, but now he had to follow the white-robed wolf, listen to his instructions, and let him do whatever he wanted.
日日巡山岗，碌碌磨刀光。
匆匆千里外，夜夜尽望乡。
自黑熊精从南海归来，他总说得授菩萨秘法，学会了渡劫修行、起死复生的法门，许多妖魔听此传闻，便纷纷投来黑风山，跟在他门下修炼。却说新来的小妖，难免要从最下等的活儿干起，但为了得到大王赏识，他们都十分卖命。
这些妖魔中有只狼妖，最是勤劳肯干，他常常天不大亮就起床巡山，夜深时分还额外做活，但凡收得好物件，总是最先上贡。他成日忙碌，连结交同伴的时间也没有，大家对他也无甚印象，连名字都叫不出来。
兄长见他这般努力却毫无升迁迹象，便尽出积蓄，为他在黑风大王的道场，买了个听经的坐席。他坐在道场中，却不住叹息：自投来黑风山，家里已耗尽盘缠，兄长还浪费这种闲钱，好生可惜，若是给我换面盾该多好，指不定等我有了新换的刀，便可立下大功。
正思忖，就有身着黄袍的护法们向他散下些符纸来。那大王先命众人将符纸吃入肚里，再率众盘腿打坐，一起大声诵经，足足念了个把时辰才停下。大王提及有成效者可起立示意时，就见前方有一白袍狼率先站起，它满头大汗，喜不自胜，自称周身发热，此刻心明眼亮。
那狼妖暗想：众人挤在一室，如何不汗流浃背？诵经许久，如何不胸怀敞亮？他疑惑不解，自己身后的青牛精也站了起来。其后，更多的妖，随着他俩陆陆续续起立。看大家如此，那狼妖犹豫着如何作为，好在大王挥挥手，众人又全坐下了。
其后，不少小妖被分赏了宝物，青牛精得到了金丹，白袍狼当上了外山的小统领。而那狼妖还是拿着旧盾破刀，勤勤恳恳地巡山，但他现在必须跟在白袍狼的身后，听其指派，任其消遣。
