两个月后，小狼深觉牯护院所教助益甚少，便想放弃，忽想起那日以酒偷师，又翻出个小金佛寻至蛇巡司处。那巡司爱财，收下金佛后也不得已教了小狼几招。小狼归家，又照蛇巡司所言修炼起来。一个月后，他仍觉助益甚微，再次依葫芦画瓢，带上好物件去拜访别的妖怪。
时间一久，山里大大小小的妖魔俱被他拜访了个遍，他也听来了不少秘法。今日照着这个练，明日照着那个练，修行却毫无进展，连本族的刀法都使不好。终于，有个好心的老狼打算指点他一二，他却用听来的妙诀把老狼反驳到哑口无言。此后，族中再也无人愿意教他了。
